El gran vuelo is the title of the seventh chapter of Carpentier’s El reino de este mundo. There, Mackandal is said to remain in ‘the kingdom of this world’ despite having been executed by the white guards. Mackandal’s ‘great flight’ began when his essence got disembodied from his physical incarnation and into the collective imagination of his people and the natural world. Remaining in ‘the kingdom of this world’ by means of perpetual processes of disembodiment. Much like Mackandal’s myth, the sound of acoustic distortion heard in this piece (called CLSTR0) has disembodied the original percussion instruments where I found it; the sound CLSTR0 has found its way into many computer vision systems, generative AI instruments, installations, lecture-recitals, texts, and a new acoustic object called CLSTR1.
